What You Need To Know About CBD Oil And Anxiety

CBD oil has so many uses. In fact, reducing anxiety is one of the top reasons that people give for using CBD oil. Thousands of CBD oil users swear by it as a way to treat anxiety disorders such as GAD, OCD, PTSD, and panic attacks. But what does science have to say about this?

What Is Anxiety?

Before we look at CBD oil, let’s talk about anxiety. After all, Anxiety is the most common psychological condition in the U.S. Nearly one in five adults in this country suffers from some form of anxiety disorder. That’s more than 40 million people. And patients who suffer from anxiety disorders are up to six times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders.

Anxiety is a natural physical response to the stresses of life. It evolved to assure our survival. In stressful situations, the brain releases neurotransmitters that bring about changes in our physiology that help us deal with stressful situations. But sometimes neurotransmitters can go out of control. Even minor imbalances in brain chemistry, combined with the stress of everyday life, can lead to feelings of anxiety.

Anxiety is not a singular disease with a singular cause. Every anxiety patient requires customized treatment. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, there are five major types of anxiety:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a common ailment that produces excessive worrying and tension without any apparent reason. Often those suffering from GAD believe that the things they worry about are the cause of their anxiety and don’t realize that it’s actually caused by an easy-to-treat chemical imbalance. Consequently, they fail to seek help.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is caused by extremely traumatic experiences such as life-threatening situations, extreme violence, or physical abuse. It’s thought that a normal process called fear extinction, which allows people to put traumatic events behind them, is suppressed in PTSD patients.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, is characterized by obsessions, compulsions, and repetitive behaviors. In mild cases, OCD can result in repetitive worrisome thoughts, but in severe cases, it can interfere with everyday home and work life.

Social Anxiety Disorder causes people to feel anxiety in social situations. In mild cases, people with this disorder are deeply self-conscious. In the worst cases, they can be totally paralyzed by fear, causing sufferers to avoid social contact altogether.

Panic Disorder is characterized by sudden, intense fear in situations where there seems to be no danger of harm. Physical symptoms of panic attacks can include hyperventilation, increased heart rate, chest pain, and dizziness. In the worst cases, it can become so severe that it requires emergency care.

Can CBD Oil Be Used To Treat Anxiety?

Researchers have only recently begun to undertake research into CBD oil’s ability to reduce symptoms of anxiety disorders. But there is a strong indication that CBD oil interacts with certain cannabinoid receptors in the brain which can increase the production of a hormone known as serotonin that is responsible for switching off anxiety. Anxiety patients often display low levels of serotonin. Anandamide, a neurotransmitter that triggers the production of serotonin, was the first endocannabinoid to be discovered. Endocannabinoids are cannabinoids produced naturally by the body.

When the brain determines that a stressful situation has subsided, it releases anandamide, which triggers the production of serotonin, inducing feelings of relaxation and safety. CBD oil is believed to have the ability to mimic the effects of anandamide and trigger serotonin production.

There is preclinical evidence which suggests that CBD oil may be useful in reducing anxiety symptoms and behaviors. One study report published by the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health entitled, “Cannabidiol as a Potential Treatment for Anxiety Disorders,” claimed that “existing preclinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder when administered acutely.”

A team of researchers in the Laboratory of Panic and Respiration at the Institute of Psychology in Rio de Janeiro studied CBD oil’s effects on anxiety in mice. The report, which was published in 2009 in the British Journal of Pharmacology, states, “Studies involving animal models, performing a variety of experiments on [anxiety] … suggest that CBD exhibited anti-anxiety and antidepressant-like effects… CBD can attenuate acute autonomic responses to stress and its delayed emotional consequences by facilitating 5-HT1A receptor-mediated neurotransmission.” In simpler terms, CBD seemed to have the ability to alter the response to events which can trigger anxiety.

Another research study published in 2013 which was also done on lab mice showed that supplementation with CBD oil prevented anxiety by increasing anandamide levels. Researchers in the study wrote, “Cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-psychotomimetic component of the plant Cannabis sativa, exerts therapeutically promising effects on human mental health such as inhibition of psychosis, anxiety, and depression.”

Altogether, the evidence seems to support the idea that CBD oil is effective at reducing the causes and symptoms of anxiety.
