This Is How CBD Oil May Help With Joint Pain And Inflammation
Posted on July 11, 2018
Meds Biotech CBD oil is a pharmacist-formulated line of products for people seeking to improve their health and general wellbeing as well as to address the aches and pains that come with everyday life. There is ample scientific research to suggest that CBD oil, CBD gummies, and CBD capsules can be effective agents for the reduction of joint pain, especially. Let’s take a look at how CBD oil affects the human body in ways that may result in measurable pain relief.
The Role of Inflammation in Pain
There are only a few conditions that can cause pain in the human body. One of them, of course, is stimulation of pain nerves. Another is damage to pain nerves. And finally, the most common source of pain is a process known as inflammation.
As the word suggests, inflammation is an inflaming of injured tissue. It results in swelling, redness, and increased body temperatures at the site of injury. This, in turn, is what causes most of our pains.
If you can reduce inflammation, you can almost always reduce the pain.
When there is an injury, the body attempts to prevent infections and infiltration by viruses and toxins by increasing blood flow and sending white blood cells to the injury site. It causes stiffness, redness, swelling, and pressure which, in turn, activates pain nerves.
There are two types of inflammation —acute inflammation and chronic inflammation. Acute inflammation is the result of an injury or infection and eventually goes away as the injury or infection heals. Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, is the result of ongoing pain. It can be caused by autoimmune conditions as well as environmental causes such as ongoing exposure to irritants such as industrial chemicals or organic compounds such as pollen. Allergies are a major cause of inflammation.
CBD Oil Is A Powerful Anti-Inflammatory
CBD oil and its powerful anti-inflammatory effects are well-documented. In fact, not only have there been numerous scientific studies, the U.S. government has actually awarded itself a patent on CBD and other cannabinoids for use as an anti-inflammatory agent. The opening abstract on the application reads as follows:
The application relates to the identification that cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol can be used to treat inflammatory diseases. Cannabinoids for use in treating inflammatory diseases, methods of treating inflammatory diseases and cannabinoids in combination with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers are claimed.
Research On CBD Oil and Its Anti-Inflammatory Effects
There have been numerous research studies into the powerful anti-inflammatory effects of CBD oil. A report on one such study, entitled, “Cannabidiol as an emergent therapeutic strategy for lessening the impact of inflammation on oxidative stress,” suggested that “CBD may have utility in treating a number of human diseases and disorders now known to involve activation of the immune system and associated oxidative stress, as a contributor to their etiology and progression. These include rheumatoid arthritis, types 1 and 2...”
In 2016, a study entitled “Transdermal cannabidiol reduces inflammation and pain-related behaviors in a rat model of arthritis,” the authors of the study concluded, “These data indicate that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviors and inflammation without evident side-effects.”
Another review was done in 2014 entitled, “Involvement of the endocannabinoid system in osteoarthritis pain,” notes that CBD shows promise as an effective treatment for arthritis. And a 2017 study entitled “Attenuation of early phase inflammation by cannabidiol prevents pain and nerve damage in rat osteoarthritis,” determined that CBD may be useful for the treatment of joint pain.
Human Studies On The Effects of CBD Oil On Joint Pain
Studies are also being done on humans to determine the effectiveness of CBD oil as an anti-inflammatory.
In 2005, an anonymous questionnaire which surveyed arthritis patients in Australia showed that 25 percent of respondents were using cannabinoids to treat joint pain. And in a survey of British medical cannabis patients, more than 20 percent of respondents reported treating their joint pain with cannabinoids.
The first-ever controlled trial assessing CBD's effects on joint pain took place in January of 2006. In their report, investigators at the British Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Disease claimed to have successfully treated arthritis patients with cannabinoids. Entitled, “Preliminary assessment of the efficacy, tolerability, and safety of a cannabis medicine (Sativex) in the treatment of pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis,” the report claimed that treatment with cannabinoids over a five-week period produced a significant reduction in pain and inflammation with no serious side effects.
And, finally, researchers at Tokyo's National Institute for Neuroscience studied all the available scientific literature on CBD as a treatment for autoimmune diseases. Their report entitled, “Cannabinoids and the immune system: potential for the treatment of inflammatory diseases,” which was published in the Journal of Neuroimmunology concluded, "Cannabinoid therapy of RA could provide symptomatic relief of joint pain and swelling as well as suppressing joint destruction and disease progression."
There is also a mountain of anecdotal evidence — stories from people who use CBD daily to treat joint pain — that backs up the science.
Ways CBD Oil Is Used To Treat Joint Pain
Although topical preparations are available for treating joint pain on site, and some people swear by them, the truth is that the CBD oil is absorbed into the bloodstream and circulated throughout the entire body. This is actually a good thing since inflammation is almost never limited to one area. It can be systemic and cause problems throughout the body. In fact, heart disease is caused by systemic inflammation. Therefore, delivery methods which focus on delivering the CBD oil to the circulatory system are most effective.
