CBD Oils Explained
Posted on March 19, 2018
We’ve all been hearing a lot lately about CBD oil and how people use it for health. But what is CBD oil?
CBD is short for Cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is part of a family of compounds called phytocannabinoids (plant-based cannabinoids). Scientists have identified more than 100 active phytocannabinoids in hemp extract, CBD being the most abundant.
While CBD is widely believed to provide numerous health benefits, it does not have psychotropic effects such as those caused by THC and does not cause a high.
How does CBD oil work?
CBD mimics signalling compounds naturally made in the human body called endocannabinoids. Their purpose is to regulate bodily functions at a cellular level. The body produces them in response to particular conditions. They bind only to particular receptors which are “keyed” to their structure and signal cells to change their function.
Scientists call the receptors that have an affinity for cannabinoid molecules, appropriately, cannabinoid receptors. And they call the entire system of cannabinoid receptors the endocannabinoid system, or ECS, for short. These receptors are found in abundance throughout the body and are especially prevalent in the major organs.
Cannabinoids and other signaling molecules control a myriad of cellular-level functions. These functions include modulating metabolism, regulating electrical activity in neurons, reducing inflammation, increasing serotonin levels, and more.
Where does CBD come from?
Cannabinoids such as CBD are commonly extracted from a particular group of cannabis strains called “industrial hemp” or “agricultural hemp.” The plant’s extract can contain as much as 25% CBD, but is required to have under 0.3% THC
Once extracted from hemp, the essential oil can be refined to produce concentrated forms of hemp oil. And further refinement can produce 99% pure CBD, (isolate) which is a colorless, odorless crystalline powder that looks a lot like salt.
These concentrates and isolates of hemp extract are often mixed into oils such as hemp seed oil and coconut oil to produce what we commonly refer to as CBD oil.
